Benefits of mulching
Mulching has a number of benefits for gardens, and here are a few reasons why you should consider starting to mulch your garden:
- Mulching helps to conserve water: Mulch helps to retain moisture in the soil, which means that you will need to water your plants less frequently. This is especially important during hot, dry weather when water evaporation can be high.
- Mulching helps to suppress weeds: A layer of mulch can help to block light and prevent weed seeds from germinating. This can save you time and effort in maintaining your garden, as you will have fewer weeds to pull.
- Mulching helps to regulate soil temperature: Mulch can help to keep the soil cool in the summer and warm in the winter, which can be beneficial for plants that are sensitive to temperature fluctuations.
- Mulching adds nutrients to the soil: As mulch decomposes, it adds organic matter and nutrients to the soil, which can benefit the plants growing in your garden.
- Mulching can improve the appearance of your garden: A layer of mulch can help to give your garden a tidy, finished look, and it can also add visual interest with the variety of colors and textures available.
Mulching at Beyond Buckthorns
For some yeas we mulched our main garden with a mixture of compost, sawdust (from insulation) and newspapers. We also use the scythe to cut the areas we let grow for mulching. Other parts are mulched with wood chips from our own production. Basically its a wide mixture of mulch material.
