Benefits of Hugelkultur
- Soil improvement: The logs and woody debris help to improve soil structure and fertility, promoting healthy plant growth.
- Increased water retention: The logs and woody debris help to retain water, reducing the need for frequent watering and making it possible to grow crops in areas with limited access to water.
- Increased yields: The improved soil structure and fertility can lead to increased yields, as plants are able to grow stronger and produce more fruit and vegetables.
- Reduced need for inputs: Hugelkultur can help to reduce the need for inputs, such as fertilizers and pesticides, as the soil is naturally rich in nutrients and less prone to pests and disease.
- Carbon sequestration: By using woody debris as a foundation for the garden beds, Hugelkultur can help to sequester carbon, reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Hugelkultur can be an effective and sustainable way to grow crops and improve soil health, and is well-suited for a range of different climates and growing conditions. Whether you are an experienced gardener or a beginner, Hugelkultur can be a valuable tool for promoting sustainability in your landscape. It is often used at permaculture homesteads and farms.

Lumia created a Hugelkultur some time ago. It is within Zone 1, besides our small greenhouse. In 2022 we grew a mixture of kale and squash on it.
