It is possible to grow apple trees from seeds, but it is generally not the most reliable or efficient way to propagate apple trees. This is because apple seeds do not always produce trees that are true to the parent tree, and the resulting trees may not produce fruit that is of the same quality or characteristics as the parent tree. Additionally, apple seeds can take a long time to germinate and grow into mature trees, which can be a slow and uncertain process.

If you are interested in growing an apple tree from seed, you can try the following steps:

  1. Collect fresh, ripe apples and remove the seeds from the center of the fruit.
  2. Rinse the seeds to remove any flesh or debris, and then let them dry for a few days.
  3. Once the seeds are dry, you can plant them in a well-draining soil mix in a container or a sunny spot in your garden.
  4. Keep the soil moist, and provide the seedlings with plenty of sunlight.
  5. As the seedlings grow, you may need to transplant them into larger containers or into the ground.

It is important to note that even if you are successful in growing an apple tree from seed, it may take several years before the tree is mature enough to produce fruit. If you want to grow apple trees more quickly and with more predictable results, it is generally recommended to purchase young trees from a reputable nursery or tree supplier.

At Beyond Buckthorns we have a mixture of apple trees, some purchased, some grown from seeds. Those that we grow from seeds will later get grafted.
