What to expect

This course offers a day of indoor and outdoor activities, providing an action-oriented, holistic introduction to permaculture principles and practices. In the morning, we’ll get to know each other, after which you’ll delve into the ethics and principles of permaculture. Many examples will demonstrate how these principles and permaculture design can be used to create sustainable and resilient systems - not only in the garden. After lunch we will look into different ways on how to apply permaculture in your life, looking at social permaculture and different sustainable practices that can be used in urban environments, from reducing waste to creating green spaces in your community. The day ends with a nature walk and a visit to a permaculture allotment for some hands-on action.

Who should attend?

  • Beginners looking for a comprehensive introduction to permaculture.
  • Urban dwellers interested in sustainable living practices.
  • Community leaders aiming to expand their knowledge.
  • Sustainability activists from like-minded movements and organisations like degrowth, peace movement, ecovillages & communal living, community gardens, student unions...
  • Backyard gardeners interested in a more natural way of working with nature rather than against it
  • Expats, students, immigrants and native Finns looking to connect with like-minded people
  • Anyone interested in creating a more sustainable and connected way of life!

Practicals

Price of the course is 20 € / person. The price includes the teaching, printouts and coffee breaks with coffee, tea and some seasonal snacks. Bring with you writing materials (pen and notebook or computer) if you want to take notes.

Lunch is bring-your-own -style. There’s a fridge and a microwave for us to use. The lunch break is an integral part of the course so if possible please bring your lunch with you instead of visiting a nearby restaurant or store.

The course is partly indoors, and the last two 1-2 hours of the course are spent outside at the allotment. We'll walk to the allotment. The allotment does not have accessible pathways, indoor spaces, chairs for sitting or bathroom facilities available, so please be prepared for that and also wear weather-appropriate clothing. If you would like to attend the course but have trouble with the accessibility, please contact us at perma (at) beyondbuckthorns.com
